TURNTABLE LAB REMIX CONTESTS
As CMO and co-founder of music tech start-up Legitmix, Booker was looking for fresh ways to engage established and aspiring remix artists. So he partnered with DJ Neil Nice and taste-making hub the Turntable Lab (TTL) to launch two remix contests — in partnership with AIAIAI, Ableton, Arturia, Audioengine, Audio-Technica, Mono, Native Instruments, Nocs, and Teenage Engineering. Mad Decent, Ego Trip and XLR8R helped promote.
Winners included Nick Wisdom, the Penelopes, DJ Platurn, DJ Smash — with Cousin Cole distinguishing himself with two consecutive wins. Making use of the Legitmix platform, producers sampled Sade, Beyonce, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Fleetwood Mac, James Brown and ATCQ, among others — with some 500 entries across the two contests. Whereas the first contest had a large proportion of mash-up style mixes, the second contest saw a higher frequency of full reworks and productions. Some of the winners and contestants went on to upload their entire remix catalogs to Legitmix, and provide valuable feedback.
