Netflix, Disney+, Nat Geo docuseries
I had the pleasure of field producing OUR LIVING WORLD, an epic 2024 Netflix Originals nature series narrated by Cate Blanchett about the “living network that connects everything on Earth.” Shot in 24 countries over 3 years and featuring my team’s series opening tracking sequence of endangered rhinos sauntering through a Nepali town, the series hit Netflix’s Top 10 in 50 countries, garnered a thoughtful review in The Guardian and received 2025 Emmy-nominations for Outstanding Nature Documentary and Outstanding Cinematography.
As Netflix writes: “Traveling from Angola to New Zealand and dozens of countries in between, filmmakers, wildlife photographers, and scientists come together to depict the wondrous tapestry of creatures and ecosystems that sustain Earth’s existence — and that are under serious threat due to human activity.”
With a crew of as little as three of us at times, I’d juggle roles as (credited) field producer, and (uncredited) DIT, gaffer, grip, camera assistant, video editor, assistant director and Swiss Army knife everything-person – at the beck and call of biologists and conservationists tracking animal behavior that tells stories of our fragile ecosystem.
I shared such transdisciplinary learnings in an article about my insights on Natural Intelligence learned on OUR LIVING WORLD and research into MIT Co-Creation Studio’s work on “co-creating with natural systems” for a future of storytelling course I created for Seneca Polytechnic. I now include co-creating with nature (or rather with Natural Intelligence) alongside any discussions of tech, innovation, storytelling and culture.
I also worked on Disney+ and Nat Geo nature series including James Cameron’s SUPERNATURAL, featuring stunning macro photography of Brood X “zombie” cicadas that emerge once every 17 years, winner of the ASC Award for best cinematography in a series at Jackson Wild Media Awards, “nature film’s equivalent to the Oscars, celebrating excellence and innovation in nature, science and conservation storytelling.”
All were shot by my close friend and collaborator, adventure documentary cinematographer Mark Ó Fearghaíl, with whom I also teamed up with on an official Tribeca Film Festival documentary selection about the Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu’s friendship, co-directed by the Oscar-winning director of THE COVE.
